“I've spent more than two decades teaching movement. The longer I teach, the more convinced I become that great teachers aren't produced by simply learning a repertoire. They're developed through curiosity, practice, support, honesty and a lot of graft.”

Meet the Founder

Stacey Smith

One story.

I came to Pilates through a lifetime of movement, but really, I came to education through people.

I trained in Contemporary Dance at Middlesex University, graduating with a BA (Hons), and went on to train as an ISTD teacher in Ballet and Modern. I taught dance, including GCSE Dance, before Pilates gradually became the work that changed the direction of my career.

My Pilates education has never followed just one path. I first trained through the contemporary system with STOTT in Mat, Reformer and Total Barre and completed my Level 3 Mat qualification with Future Fit. Later, I returned to being an apprentice myself and completed my Full Comprehensive training through Authentic Pilates Education at Exhale Pilates, studying with Olga Tamara, Carlie Skan, Brooke Siler and Gaby Noble. I eventually became Education Coordinator at Exhale, supporting apprentices through the same kind of journey I had taken myself.

And I have kept learning.

I've studied Before the 100 with Blossom Leilani Crawford and completed Kathy Ross-Nash's 10 Week Challenge, alongside workshops and training with some extraordinary teachers from across the Pilates community. I also hold Level 5 training in Soft Tissue Therapy and Sports Massage, and regularly attend Dissection and Cadaver studies.

I have taken more anatomy and physiology exams over the years than I care to count. My earlier public biography reflects that combination of Pilates education, anatomy/bodywork study and continuing professional development.

I've launched a commercial studio, created and delivered my own Mat and Comprehensive teacher education, and supported more than 100 apprentices through their training.

But the longer I teach, the less interested I am in simply collecting qualifications.

I'm interested in what makes someone a good teacher.

Curiosity. Exploration. Practice. Confidence. Knowing the work, but also knowing the person standing in front of you.

That is why I created The Pilates Education Collective.

I want our education to have high standards without losing its humanity. I believe in respect, honesty, kindness and a lot of graft — from me as an educator and from every apprentice who chooses to do this properly.

I am still learning. I hope I always will be.

And despite everything written above, my greatest achievement is very simple: my daughter.
